Terms of use and licence
Last updated 27 September 2026 · version 3
In plain terms. OBDTrip reads from your car. The only thing it ever changes is its stored fault codes, and only when you ask. It is a record-keeper and an informant, not a diagnostic authority and certainly not a mechanic. Do not use it while it would distract you from driving, and do not treat what it says as a substitute for a qualified opinion about your vehicle. Lap times, acceleration timings and other performance figures are for closed circuits and private land only — never for public roads.
1. Agreement
These terms govern your use of the OBDTrip iOS application and obdtrip.com, both published by Impossible Possible, and are the licence under which you may use the application. The application asks you to accept them when you first set it up. Installing or using either means you accept them. Where Apple's standard End User Licence Agreement also applies to your App Store download, it applies alongside these terms; where the two conflict on a matter Apple governs, Apple's terms prevail.
2. What the application does
OBDTrip connects to a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter you supply, reads standard diagnostic information published by your vehicle, records it together with location and motion data from your iPhone, and presents the result to you.
The application's interaction with your vehicle is read-only, with one exception that you control. It does not issue actuator commands, alter coding, write to control unit memory, perform security access or carry out firmware operations.
The exception is clearing stored fault codes, which the application does only when you ask it to and confirm. Clearing codes also erases freeze-frame data and resets the emissions readiness monitors, which can make a fault harder to diagnose and can affect an emissions or roadworthiness test until the monitors have run again. A fault that is still present will return. The decision to clear codes, and its consequences, are yours.
3. Safe use
- Do not operate the application while driving. Configure it before you set off.
- Live displays, including CarPlay and Lock Screen surfaces, are for occasional glances only. Your attention belongs on the road, and your vehicle's own instruments remain authoritative.
- Fit and remove the adapter with the vehicle stationary and, where your vehicle's handbook says so, with the ignition off.
- Obey all applicable road traffic law. Nothing here overrides it.
3a. Laps, timings and performance figures
The application can time laps of a circuit and measure acceleration, and shows peaks such as the highest speed or engine speed reached on a drive. These features exist for use on closed circuits, race tracks and private land where you have the owner's permission — for example a track day run by an organiser.
- Never use lap timing, acceleration timing or any other performance feature on a public road, and never drive faster, harder or differently in order to produce a figure.
- The application measures what happened; it does not encourage, reward or rank speed, and nothing it shows is an invitation to exceed a speed limit or to drive in a way that is unsafe or unlawful.
- You alone are responsible for how you drive, for complying with the law and with any circuit's rules, and for any consequence of doing otherwise.
- Timings come from phone and vehicle sensors and are approximate. They are not suitable for competition timing or any official purpose.
4. Accuracy, and what this is not
Readings come from your vehicle's own sensors and from your phone's sensors. Both can be wrong, delayed, unavailable or misinterpreted. Adapters vary in quality and in what they support. Observations, trends and health notes the application produces are informational only.
OBDTrip is not:
- a substitute for professional diagnosis or servicing;
- a legal record of speed, distance or driving behaviour;
- evidence for an insurance, employment or enforcement purpose;
- a safety system, or any part of one.
If the application suggests something is wrong with your vehicle, have it looked at by someone qualified. If your vehicle's own warning lamps say something, believe them over this app.
5. Your vehicle and your adapter
You are responsible for using an adapter that is appropriate for your vehicle, and for the consequences of leaving one connected. Adapters draw power from the diagnostic port whenever they are plugged in; if a vehicle stands unused for an extended period, unplug it. We do not manufacture or supply adapters and give no warranty in respect of them.
Use the application only with vehicles you own or are authorised to use. Recording someone else's vehicle without their knowledge may be unlawful where you are.
6. Your data
Your records are yours. They are held on your device and, if you choose, in your own private iCloud storage. We hold no copy. Because we hold no copy, we cannot recover your data if you lose your device, delete the application or clear your iCloud storage — keeping a backup is your responsibility. How data is handled is set out in the privacy policy.
7. Purchases
Where features require a paid subscription or purchase, it is made through the App Store and managed in your Apple account. Prices, renewal, cancellation and refunds follow Apple's terms. Cancel a subscription in your Apple account settings; deleting the application does not cancel it.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- attempt to make the application write to, command or reconfigure a vehicle;
- interfere with, probe or overload the obdtrip.com service, or attempt to submit data to it other than through the application;
- reverse engineer the application except to the extent that law makes such a restriction unenforceable;
- use the service to gather information about other people's vehicles or journeys;
- share by link a trip you did not take, or one that shows somebody else's journey without their agreement.
9. Availability
Recording works entirely offline; it does not depend on obdtrip.com being reachable. The optional fleet comparison service is provided as-is, may change, and may be withdrawn. We do not guarantee uptime for it.
10. Liability
The application and the website are provided without warranty of any kind beyond what your local law requires. To the fullest extent the law permits, Impossible Possible is not liable for damage to a vehicle, loss of data, financial loss, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the application, an adapter, or reliance on anything the application reports.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
11. Changes
These terms may change. The date and version at the top show when they last did. When a change is material, the application asks you to accept the revised terms before you continue to use it.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of your country of residence.
